and now the moment we've all been waiting for....

Every year at this time, the friendly folks over at the You Am I mailing list(punkarella-subscribe@yahoogroups.com) throw their names into a hat and pull out the name of a fellow 'Punk. Then they create a CD/Cassette of fave tunes and mail it off to that fellow 'Punk. It's the Punkarella Christmas Swap!

So anyway.....this year is my third time giving it ago, and as i started to compile my fave tunes of 2004, it quickly became apparent that 1 cd just wouldn't cut it, so my fellow 'Punk this year got a double disc, the contents of which are conveniently listed below:

DISC 1:

Girls in Hawaii - "Flavor"
(From Here To There LP)

actually a 2003 release, but who's counting?
these Belgians write some catchy stuff!

=======================================================

The Libertines - "Campaign of Hate"
(The Libertines LP)

Pete's drug use continues to threaten the life of this band, not to mention his own life, so here's hoping he can get cleaned up and the band continues to produce work like this.

=======================================================

Kasabian - "Lost Souls Forever" (or L.S.F.)
(Kasabian LP)

=======================================================

Ambulance LTD - "Yoga Means Union"
(LP LP)

yes, it's actually called LP

=======================================================

The Tragically Hip - "Gus: The Polar Bear from CentralPark"
(In Between Evolution LP)

my fellow Canadians finally return to fine form!

=======================================================

Laguardia - "Holy Ghost"
(Welcome to the Middle LP)

another 2003 release, but it snuck in there.

=======================================================

Green Day - "St. Jimmy"
(American Idiot LP)

solid from start to finish.
my #2 disc for 2004.

=======================================================

Graham Coxon - "Freakin' Out"
(Happiness in Magazines LP)

solo disc NUMBER FOUR! from the former Blur guitarist.
another dose of awesome lo-fi gems.
his guitar work continues to impress!

=======================================================

The Thermals - "How We Know"
(Fuckin' A LP)

=======================================================

Secret Machines - "Sad & Lonely"
(Now Here is Nowhere LP)

acid rock.
awesome!

=======================================================

Kings of Leon - "The Bucket"
(from the european single.....soon to be released on Aha Shake Heartbreak LP)

not released until March 2005 or something, but i snagged an import copy from Amazon.com for cheap!

=======================================================
Air - "Surfing on a Rocket"
(Talkie Walkie LP)

=======================================================
Pinback - "AFK"
(Summer in Abaddon LP)

=======================================================
Earlimart - "The Hidden Track"
(Treble and Tremble LP)

led by the neighbor & friend of Elliott Smith, and composed just before and after his death.

=======================================================

The Fall - "Sparta 2xx"
(The Real New Fall LP LP)

i could never get into smith's vocals, but after hearing a couple of tracks off this thing, i had to grab it.

=======================================================
Autolux - "Blanket"
(Future Perfect LP)

=======================================================
Ted Leo/Pharmacists - "Bleeding Powers"
(Shake The Sheets LP)

hands down #1 pick for 2004.

=======================================================

DISC 2:

Matthew Good - "Alert Status Red"
(White Light Rock and Roll Review LP)

another fellow Canadian also returns to form.

=======================================================

On The Speakers - "Dance Crazy"
(EP)

=======================================================
Local H - "Heaven on the Way Down"
(Whatever Happened to P.J. Soles? LP)

i'll never get tired of this 2-man band.

=======================================================

Guided By Voices - " Gonna Never Have to Die"
(Half Smiles of the Decomposed LP)

we'll miss ye.

=======================================================

DJ Shadow - "Lost & Found"
(Live! In Tune and On Time LP)

=======================================================

A.C. Newman - "Miracle Drug"
(The Slow Wonder LP)

yet another fellow Canadian showing off his stuff!

=======================================================

Interpol - "Narc"
(Antics LP)

=======================================================

The Datsuns - "Get Up!"
(Outta Sight/Outta Mind LP)

another fine aussie band, sort of a dirtier/messier version of Jet.

=======================================================

The Black Keys - "10am Automatic"
(Rubber Factory LP)

again showing my soft spot for a 2-man band.

=======================================================

and you will know us by the trail of dead - "Worlds Apart"
(from the teaser single of the same name....to be released on the Worlds Apart LP January 2005)

=======================================================

Mike Doughty - "Move On"
(Future Soundtrack For America LP)

=======================================================

Walking Concert - "What's Your New Thing"
(Run to be Born LP)

Walter from Quicksand and Rival Schools returns with his latest creation.
it's a little more varied than previous work, but still fine.

=======================================================

The Vines - "Animal Machine"
(Winning Days LP)

the press continues to slag these guys, but it's fine stuff.

=======================================================

C'mon - "Easier Said Than Done"
(Midnight is the Answer LP)

yes, another Canadian.
Rock God Ian Blurton puts together his latest group and proceeds to blow the roof off the place.

=======================================================

!!! (chk chk chk) - "Hello? Is This Thing On?"
(Louden Up Now LP)

=======================================================

Juliana Hatfield - "Get In Line"
(In Exile Deo LP)

=======================================================
Elliott Smith - "A Fond Farewell"
(From a Basement on the Hill LP)

R.I.P.
knowing the circumstances, it's a heartbreaking listen.
but there are some very beautiful moments.

i got nothin'.

no rants, no raves, just livin'.
